Do you believe in faith?

Untitled #209

Someone asked me the other day if I believe in fate. Of course, I do. But I believe you have to be willing to receive it with an open heart and mind and at the same time not take everything so literally. The universe does reveal some insight into our lives, but you have to be ready to listen to it. For me, It led me down a path which I self-published a book. I’ve been writing for the longest time but never had any desire to become an author, only because I thought it would be too complicated and who needs the heartache of endless rejections anyways. It wasn’t until two years ago that I decided I needed to be more active, I felt this overwhelming energy I needed to burn or maybe it was some need for change. So I started running outdoors, which anyone who knows me, knows I never been an active person; like never. I rather eat chocolate chip cookies then do any form of exercise. Honestly, I surprised myself because now I love to run but only eat chocolate chip cookies afterward. I swear honest truth! How do think I maintain my hips?

One morning on one of my runs, I stopped at a park bench and there I found scribbled in black marker was the question, what are you afraid of? Of course, it didn’t pertain to me in any way, but it got me thinking. It set some wheels in motion.

I thought about the last time I did anything challenging. When was the last time I did something that scared me? Then I figured it was time; I needed to write my book and get it out into the world. I honestly felt it was a sign from the universe saying to me this is your time; you’ve got this. So go out and do it … but it was me to get me there.

It wasn’t until I read the book, After I Do by Taylor Jenkins Reid, that things started happening. I loved this book so much that I wanted to write the kind of book that would inspire, as much as other authors had inspired me. But first I needed to learn the rules, so I got online and read everything I could about writing, anything that would better my craft, and I began to write every day. It wasn’t until I took a webinar, the one that you can get a critique of your first chapter by an agent. So when I got my critique back, she asked me for fifty more pages, and then it didn’t pan out. But still, it was something, and it didn’t hurt so bad to be rejected it just push me harder. You wouldn’t believe who the agent of the critique represented; Taylor Jenkins Reed. Is it a sign of some sort? Maybe, maybe not. But this is how I look at it; if I didn’t see the message, if I didn’t read Tailor’s book, I wouldn’t have gotten online and signed up for the webinar. If I didn’t get rejected, then I wouldn’t force myself to push harder, if I didn’t complete The proverbial Mr.Universe I wouldn’t be here writing this for you.

The universe leads one thing into another; it’s only the beginning of my journey, I still have a lot to learn, but I remain open minded and open hearted.

So yes, I do trust you Mr. Universe.

Easy Summer Look for men

Untitled #208

There is nothing I love more than printed tee for the summer. Whether it’s for men or women, it’s one way to add fun and casual to your look. Paired it up with lighter denim wash, more destructive the better and of course had been an important staple in Nick Montgomery’s wardrobe in The Proverbial Mr.Universe.

Untitled #207
When I was young, maybe five or six, I would spend hours sketching and making clothing for my dolls and it was something I enjoyed.  One day my mother turned to me and said you should become a designer and from that day on that’s all I wanted to be. I knew in my bones this was what I was born to do. There were countless nights I would dream I would walk down the runway like all the designers do at the end of the show. Or practice signing my autograph because some day I was going to be a famous fashion designer.
Here I am writing to you, alone and smiling to myself. No, I’m not crazy … or I hope I’m not.
I’m smiling even though, knowing now that it didn’t turn out they way I imagined, and truthfully I’m  okay with that.
I admire the determination that my younger self-had. The relentless fire in me to pursue something I love even thought I had many people and a few teachers telling me it was a waste of time because here in Montreal there’s no niche for it.
But I did it none the less. I graduated from design school and even landed a job working for a big denim designer in Montreal which I had admired so much … it turned out he’s a terrible human being, which it taught me another lesson.  Maybe you should never meet your idol, they’re human of course you’re going to be disappointed in some way. But that’s a whole another story.
Even though the world will never know Maria La Serra the fashion designer … I’m okay with that because I did everything I set out to do. Lead a creative career; I met so many amazing people that I was lucky enough to forge a long lasting friendship with and in life it not the destination but the ride that matters. I told my new friend when she wanted to know more about me and my career in fashion … with every industry it has its ugly side, its challenges, but your passion has to overcome all that this.
And if you’re reading this Andrea, please follow your dreams, listen to what your heart is telling you, It’s your heart that knows you better than anyone else.
Nothing is impossible, except choosing to do nothing.
Happy Monday!

Bring out the pastels!

When people discover that I’m about to self-publish my first book, they’re surprised. Maybe it’s something that they never expected from me since my background is illustrating and design. I’ve been keeping it a secret because generally I don’t like to toot my own horn (I wasn’t sure if I was capable of seeing this through). In the last two years, I’ve been writing and attending as many webinars about writing, doing everything possible to improve my craft. Writing before was only personal, so it never mattered if it was good or not. I can’t explain to you why after all these years I find myself on this path; it’s not something I envision myself doing. But one day something inside of me just shifted, like this unexplained feeling. Something pushing me down this path, all of a sudden I felt this need to write, a lot. If you ever listen to Elizabeth Gilbert podcasts “Do what ignites your soul,”  pretty much sums up what I was experiencing. Oh, let’s not talk about the fear! Writing a book for the whole world to see is daunting … terrifying. There will be several shenanigans, which are going to throw stupid comments at your way. Like just the other day someone said to me. “So you think Hollywood is going to turn your book into a movie?”

That’s not the reason I’m doing it. Yes, I know I have a better chance of winning a free ticket in a Lotto 649 (side note: I never play the lotto!) The bottom line is, why am I doing this? Because it ignites my soul and It doesn’t matter if only one person likes it or a million and that’s the truth; well mine anyways. Look, in some ways writing a book is like raising a child. You give it everything it needs to grow, give it love and patience. Do everything possible to cultivate and make it as good as possible. When the time comes, you need to let it go. And as you stand at your front door waving your hand in the air, watching what you’ve created go out into the world. You think to yourself that it might not be perfect, but you’ve given it your best. You have given the world your heart, and that’s the best of you. What more can you ask for?

XO Maria

Hello spring?

I don’t know where you guys live but here in Montreal, the weather is depressing. It’s been nothing but rain, rain and more- rain. After a long winter, we’re all starving for a bit of sunshine.  Down below I put together a few items that are a must-have in your wardrobe for this spring. If it ever gets here!

And for all you men out there,
men wear

Here are some inspiration for my characters in my next book.Hopefully coming out fall 2016. I love Lily Collins look; only she could pull off a leather jacket worn on top of a sequin halter dress, and what’s there to say about Scott Eastwood? What do you think , wouldn’t they make a cute couple?
Happy Wednesday!

I wanted to share with you guys The Proverbial Mr.Universe cover!  It will be available for pre-sale June 7. Read the synopsis below…

Olivia Montiano just caught her fiancé cheating. Now she is forced to question what she wants out of life and love. Striving to live up to her father’s unrealistic standards for the past twenty-three years, every decision she has ever made was with her father’s wishes in mind—until she finds mysterious, handwritten letters tucked away in places only meant for her. That’s when she realizes she’s been on the wrong path all along and gives her heart to a guy her father thinks is entirely wrong.

Washed-up abstract artist Nick Montgomery has had quite a few setbacks in life. He’s become accustomed to never needing anyone, thinking he’s just fine—until he meets the girl with the red scarf. She’s not his type. But the universe has other ideas. Nick has a secret he’s keeping from her, afraid it will bring their new relationship to a sudden halt.

Will they figure out what the Universe holds for them?

You probably already figured out I used Olivia Palermo as a base for my character Olivia Montiano, in my upcoming novel The Proverbial Mr. Universe. Though the only thing they have in common is they are both in fashion, and my Olivia, of course, is fiction.

I love Olivia Palermo’s style, she emulates an excellent fashion sense that it’s done effortlessly. She has a collection called Chealsea28, that she just launched at Nordstrom, go and check it out.

Here are a few ways on how to get her look

Fall fashions

Her style is always classic, is inspired by the 50’s and 60’s, old Hollywood glamour.

Fall fashion

Her signature color is red and loves to mix and match to create a unique personal style.

Fall fashion

In interviews, Olivia had said that she liked adding accessories like a great cocktail ring or a chunky necklace. It was a good way to dress up an outfit and add a personal touch.
